UPEACE and El Rodeo Stories

"Los que inventaron y después pusieron nombres a las constelaciones eran cuentistas. Dibujando una línea imaginaria entre las agrupaciones de estrellas les dio una imagen y una identidad. Las estrellas entrelazadas en esa línea eran como eventos en una narrativa. Por supuesto que imaginando las constelaciones no cambiaron las estrellas, o no cambió el negro vacío que las rodea. Lo que cambió fue la manera que las personas leen el cielo. ~John Berger

Durante mi maestría en Educación para la Paz en El Rodeo, Costa Rica, dediqué mi tesis a investigar cómo integrar la institución internacional universitaria de UPAZ con  la comunidad de El Rodeo, casa de la Universidad. Propuse coordinar una documentación artística de El Rodeo como lugar y de las personas que habitan ahí como también las historias de los estudiantes internacionales que vienen a estudiar a la universidad por un año; para conectar las comunidades, para que se entiendan mejor y aprendan el uno del otro.

Al embarcarnos en un proyecto de contar historias no se modifican las personas que viven en el pueblo de El Rodeo o los estudiantes que cursan en la Universidad para la Paz sino que se modifican  las interacciones entre las personas, se transforman los espacios oscuros que existen en el no conocernos. Al intercambiar los espacios oscuros a imágenes de arte y belleza natural, se representan los lazos que se construyen entre los humanos, todo dentro del espacio de las palabras e imágenes. La idea de educación comunal está envuelta en este tiempo compartido, dentro de esta convivencia encontramos la idea del aprendizaje de la vida. 

Nos contamos historias para sobrevivir, el paso del tiempo a través de los registros de la historia: para poder llegar a entender mejor nuestras diferencias. Dentro de este entendimiento está el compromiso de compartir recursos, conversaciones, y la participación en la comunidad de uno como un símbolo de lo que podría ser el mundo global dentro de la realidad local. Espero poder soñar sobre muchas historias donde todos vivimos dentro de ambientes que funcionen como refugios para que nos nutran y nos ayuden a vivir con menos contradicciones humanas.

“Those who first invented and then named the constellations were storytellers. Tracing an imaginary line between clusters of stars gave them an image and an identity. The stars threaded on that line were like events threaded on a narrative. Imagining the constellations did not of course change the stars, nor did it change the black emptiness that surrounds them. What it changed was the way people read the night sky.” (Berger, p.8, 1984)

While doing my master program in Peace Education at the University for Peace I decided to dedicate my thesis on how to better integrate the higher learning institution with the host community. I proposed to coordinate an artistic documentation of El Rodeo with both the local and international community, to better connect the communities and document the history of the people and place of El Rodeo and the international stories of the students that come study at UPEACE during one year. 

 To embark in a storytelling project is not to change the people that live in the village of El Rodeo or the students that attend the University for Peace. To tell these stories is to change the interaction between people, to change the dark spaces that exist in not knowing each other. To exchange dark spaces for images of art and natural beauty, to represent bonds to be made, all within the confines of words and images. Embedded in this time shared together is the idea of community education as a way to enhance lifelong learning.  

 We tell each other stories in order to survive, passing of  time through records of history in order to reach out and understand each other. In this understanding there is the commitment to share resources, conversations, and participation in ones community as a symbol of what the global world could be in a local sphere. I hope to dream of many stories, in which we all live in the shelter of environments that nurture our every living breaths with less human contradictions.
